Last Saturday, 13 June, marked the 10th anniversary of World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKIPD). It was just begging for a big celebration! So my friend Nikki and I planned an amazing day out.
Our regular crafting group, Belfast Stitch and Bitch, teamed up with the gallery I work for, Top Floor Art. As well as being a BBC Get Creative Champion, it hosts a Craft Circle every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. We organised a hop on/hop off bus tour of Belfast that anyone was welcome to join!
We met at 10am where the buses depart. Nikki had arranged name tags and door prize tickets for everyone. We boarded the bus and headed off, knitting/crochet/spinning/sewing and crafting at the ready!
Our first stop on the tour was the Titanic Quarter, which called for a photo with the iconic sign outside the Titanic Museum.
Our second stop was the Stormont Parliament building. No work getting done there lately except by us crafters!
We also spotted Stephen, Emma’s other half and co-owner of Top Floor Art, minding their stall at St George’s.
And of course we had a browse at Lighthouse Yarns!
Our penultimate stop was Queen’s University/Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Museum! We stopped in the cafe for a (not so quick) cuppa and a bun to keep our strength up.
And then it was time to board the bus again for the last part of the tour – the home stretch!
The last part of our bus tour passed quickly.
Scenes of bus crafting:
We finished the tour in front of City Hall, where we held our door prize draws! We had several donations from generous organisations contributing to the raffle: Starbucks, the site of our weekly Belfast SnB meetups, donated a lovely basket full of goodies and a £10 gift card; Top Floor Art contributed a hand stitched Belfast map butterfly by Emma Whitehead; A Million Paper Stars (that’s me!!) made one of these necklaces just for the occasion; Lighthouse Yarns donated a beautiful skein of yarn; and we had contributions from some of our talented members that ranged from handmade stitch markers to colouring books to badges.
It was a fabulous day full of fun, friendship and crafting. Can’t wait to see what we come up with next year!
