Like many kids his age, my son is obsessed with Super Mario Brothers. He loves playing the game on the Wii, on the Nintendo DS, and watching others play it on YouTube. He LOVES Super Mario. Guess who he was for Halloween?
So when his birthday (or, more specifically, his birthday party) rolled around, he wanted a Mario party.
I couldn’t have been more excited to attempt my first theme party! Oh, the plans….
So, with the help of a generous friend with a decent printer (thanks, Nikki!), and some help from a generous husband who didn’t *really* want to spend the day helping me roll out icing or cutting mushroom cookies by hand (but did anyway, thanks, Paul!), we got to work! Here are the results:
The bunting! Just paper cutouts pasted onto triangles of card stock.
Mushroom and star cookies. Because who could resist? I snagged the idea here and just made my own cutting template. And then, of course, the CAKE!
Two different views, to show Donkey Kong riding up the back! The cake toppers are from eBay.
And with candles….
And then because we don’t do things by halves in this house, who could resist a rainbow filling?
I wish I had taken more pictures of the food – there were sandwiches, a fruit platter and pancakes (thank you, Jo!), juice, and other assorted munchies. He got lots of lovely presents, did not freak out when people sang to him, and said thank you at the end! What a lovely boy. 🙂
And did I mention the CD playlist I made, complete with sound clips from Super Mario games spliced in between the songs? There were also party bags, handmade cloth drawstring bags with each kid’s first initial embroidered on it.
Yeah. I may have gone a little overboard, but I can’t WAIT to do it again next year!
Happy fifth birthday, buddy!
