A Little Something Different

So, for people who know me, know that I’m fairly environmentally conscious. I make an effort. We’re vegetarian, we used cloth nappies on our kids, we didn’t drive the car unless we had to (we no longer have one), and we clean with a lot of vinegar and baking soda instead of bleach. We try out new things, we recycle like mad (even when it meant walking a mile to the recycling centre), and we compost even though we don’t have a garden. And we always, always, wash on 30.

Don’t get me wrong. We’re not saintly. There’s a LOT more we could be doing. But some things I don’t feel like giving up. For instance, I email most of my family and friends our Christmas/Holiday and New Year’s greetings, but there are a handful of people to whom I send actual cards. Because it means a lot to them. Or when we all came down with some kind of lurgy that lasted from November to June. At that point I busted out the bleach, much as I hate the smell. But I really thought we were just passing it round and round and round….Anyway, I digress.

So I recently got a request from a friend who asked if I could make her some reusable sanitary pads. She thought this might be a strange request. Little did she know I had already drafted a pattern and made some for myself a few years ago. 😀 Because actually, that has been one change that I resisted for so long, and when I finally took the leap, I wasn’t sure why I had held back!

These pads, I have to admit, turned out significantly better than my first efforts. Maybe it’s because I’m a lot more comfortable around a sewing machine now, or maybe it was just because I already knew what I wanted to do and how to do it. Maybe I’ll make this into a tutorial someday, cause they’re really quick and easy! Not to mention comfy and cute:

And they fold up into these handy little squares:

So I hope you like them too. And maybe if my friend does, I’ll get to do more and write a tutorial for them!

  1. Wow! That’s fairly bad ass! I think that sounds about a billion times more comfortable than those plastic lady things. Are those buttons or Velcro or something?
